Scarcity of Cash in Nigeria: The Struggle for Survival
The Current Hardship in Nigeria: Scarcity of Cash
In recent times, Nigerians have been facing one of the most difficult financial situations in the country’s history. Citizens are frustrated, businesses are struggling, and the economy has been thrown into confusion due to the scarcity of cash following the introduction of the new naira notes.
🔹 The Struggle of Citizens
For many Nigerians, accessing money from their bank accounts has become a daily battle. It is no longer as simple as using an ATM or walking into a banking hall. Instead, people are forced to spend hours under the sun, standing in long queues at ATM points, just to withdraw a small portion of their own money.
Some citizens arrive at ATM stands as early as 6:00 a.m., hoping to be among the first in line when bank officials refill or reset the machines. Yet, after waiting for hours, the amount they are allowed to withdraw is usually limited to just ₦10,000. This has made it extremely difficult for families to meet their daily needs, pay for transportation, buy food, or handle emergencies.
🔹 The Impact on Businesses
Small and medium-sized businesses have been hit the hardest. Many traders, shop owners, and service providers rely heavily on cash transactions. With money scarce, customers are unable to purchase goods, while business owners are unable to restock their shops or pay their workers. Some businesses have even shut down temporarily, as survival becomes almost impossible.
Even though cashless payment options such as bank transfers and POS machines exist, network issues and failed transactions have created more frustration. People often attempt several transfers before one goes through, and in many cases, funds are debited without the transaction being successful.
🔹 The Emotional and Social Toll
Beyond the economic impact, the cash scarcity has also taken an emotional toll on Nigerians. The stress of queuing for hours, the uncertainty of whether one will succeed in withdrawing money, and the anger of seeing banks overcrowded daily have left many citizens exhausted and unhappy.
🔹 Looking Ahead
While authorities have urged Nigerians to embrace the cashless policy, the reality on the ground shows that the system is not yet fully ready. Citizens want better access to their money, and businesses need stability to survive. Until the situation improves, the daily struggle for cash will remain a painful reality for millions of Nigerians.
